Idealist Careers Try This Challenge #1 | Reflect on Your Successes was originally published on Idealist Careers.
Back by popular demand, allow me to (re)introduce the #IdealistCareersTryThis Challenge!
In January of 2019 (remember that?!) over 600 members of the Idealist Careers community committed to complete one career-related challenge each month for the first five months of the year.
Thanks to plenty of new interest (not to mention at least one big success), we’ve decide to reboot the challenge for 2020. Last year, we offered challenge prompts via email only to those readers who subscribed in time. This time around, we’ll post all of the challenge prompts right here on Idealist Careers over the course of the next few weeks. Each one will be designed to help you reflect on, envision, build, or grow your dream social-impact career.
Pro Tip: If you already took the challenge last year, you’ll notice that the prompts are the same. That’s because it can be incredibly helpful, eye-opening, and reenergizing to make a habit of going through each of the prompts that you’ll find in the series once a year!
Here we go!
Challenge #1
Each day for the next five days, set a timer for five to 10 minutes. Use that time to write one detailed description of a professional achievement from 2019.
Why it matters
Sure, it’s officially 2020. But that doesn’t mean you have to move on from all of the fantastic things you accomplished last year, and certainly not before you get them down on paper.
Reflecting on your professional successes can benefit you in myriad ways. Here are just a few:
- Reflection turns events into genuine learning about your values, goals, strengths, and areas for growth.
- Writing down a reflection allows us to look at an achievement from a variety of angles and perspectives. It gives us a chance to ask “why?” as well as “how can I build on that event?”
- Developing your reflection muscle can make you a more attractive mentee for a potential coach or mentor.
