Overview
JerseySTEM is a non-profit organization that provides free after-school instruction in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) related disciplines to middle school girls in underserved communities in New Jersey in order to interest girls to study and potentially become employed in jobs in STEM related professions. Current programs are established in Coding, Robotics, and Chemistry.
We seek currently enrolled college students in New Jersey for a Community Service Opportunity to serve as Program Instructors (PIs).. The commitment is for 3 hours/week for 10 weeks in the Fall and/or Spring semesters to deliver an onsite class at a middle school one time per week.
JerseySTEM provides PIs with full training on the content that will be taught, and support to deliver the program. These are volunteer positions, There is free transportation available to take you to the middle schools in your area.
Responsibilities
- Participate in one hour of training each week to learn how to teach that week’s program material.
- Two or three PIs will conduct a one hour course in an after school programing (3pm or later) middle school girls (ages 10-14) once per week.
- PIs will create an encouraging and supportive environment for cultivating joy and enthusiasm for STEM
- They will empower children’s learning, providing security and building trust
- PIs provide weekly updates to JerseySTEM program lead
Weekly Time Commitment
- One 2-hour window of class time per week
- Approximately 1-hour window of training prep per week
- Travel time to and from the middle school

Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- A passion and basic understanding of STEM concepts
- Understanding of middle school age children and learning levels is helpful
- Ability to connect and empathize with people, parents, and community members
Preferred Skills
- Candidates should be currently enrolled in college or a recent graduate
- Tutoring/childcare/coaching experience a plus
- High School or College level Chemistry experience (only needed for the chemistry program)
