Are you interested in becoming a justice-oriented educator? Administrator? Are you currently a teacher looking for additional certification?

The Department of Urban Education is a dynamic teacher education program focused on social justice, inclusion, and cultural and linguistic wealth.  Our students learn from a variety of dynamic field experiences in the local Newark community and conduct coursework and inquiry with publicly engaged faculty who are leaders in their fields.  The mission of Urban Education is deeply entwined with Rutgers University-Newark’s identity as an anchor institution.  Our students gain a strong understanding of their content areas, foundations of education, culturally responsive curricula, and diverse teaching and learning methods.

We currently offer undergraduate programs, undergraduate minor, and graduate programs, focusing on schooling in urban environments. The department is dedicated to the preparation and professional development of future and current teachers, administrators, and scholars who contribute to the improvement of urban education through their teaching, community involvement, leadership, and research.  Please join us!
