4th Judicial District Attorney – Semester in Practice Externship Program
The 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office has trained future prosecutors who have developed into leaders within our Office and moved on to successful careers in other District Attorneys’ Offices all over Colorado for more than thirty years. We provide aspiring attorneys with an unparalleled opportunity to gain experience in the courtroom. Our externs learn how to be ethical, fair and professional attorneys. Our externships provide hands-on opportunities to learn whether you have what it takes to be a prosecutor, all under the guidance of our prosecution staff. Former attorney externs make up about 20% of our current lawyers. Our Externship Program at the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is a training ground for first, second, and third-year law school students looking for experience as prosecutors. We offer a variety of opportunities and positions based on your year in law school. No other District Attorney’s Office in Colorado offers 2L and 3L externs the courtroom experience that we do in the 4th Judicial District.
2L and 3L externs can work and practice in County Court under the Colorado Student Practice Act. These externs work side-by-side with County Court Prosecutors. They participate in our extensive training program in County Court and, after several weeks of training, externs are assigned to a County Court DA and immersed in County Court. Over the course of a semester externship, most 2L/3L externs try 3-5 county court cases and litigate many different types of pre-trial motions. Externs help prepare dockets and prepare cases for trial.
We offer compensation to our 2L/3L externs. If you are selected as a 2L/3L extern, you may work for credit or pay under the Colorado Student Practice Act (CSPA) as governed by Colorado Court Rule 205.7.
We offer both fall and spring externships. Our recruiting is ongoing and we encourage you to apply for the following semester. Students interested in the “Semester in Practice” externship program are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. We offer a similar summer internship program. The summer internship program can sometimes be combined with a fall or spring externship. The application period for the summer internship begins in August of the preceding year. We value the work and effort of our externs. They are trained and treated as professional, practicing prosecutors. With this model, we routinely make job offers, contingent on admission to the Colorado Bar, to successful 2L and 3L externs before graduation.
