Do you have an interest in history, working on public lands, historic preservation, or archaeology? Do you enjoy being outside and enjoying nature? If you are a student from an HBCU, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and USDA Forest Service are offering a 4-week paid internship this summer July 10-August 2, Cultural Heritage in the Forest, with the goal of bringing African American young professionals into cultural resource management, historic preservation, conservation, and related careers.

The U.S. Forest Service is looking for the next generation of professionals to join their ranks.

During the internship, students will undergo a one-week virtual orientation and then spend two weeks at the Wayne National Forest in Ohio and the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. The final few days will be spent in Washington, DC networking with ACHP and Forest Service staff and officials, enjoying historic sites, and taking advantage of the Nation’s Capital.

Interns will:

· Experience how a career in historic preservation, and/or conservation plays a critical role in supporting the stewardship of public lands

· Learn how the Forest Service collaborates with partners and tribes to meet its

mission and stewardship responsibilities

· Work to preserve and restore a historic site on public lands

· Participate in archaeological surveys, and explore the history found beneath the forest

ground

· Network with conservation and preservation professionals, elected officials, tribal

leaders, and federal leaders

· Participate in authentic experiences at historic sites and gain exposure to original

source documents and artifacts, including those related to African American history, the Underground Railroad and Native American histories

All expenses are paid and students will receive a stipend of $450/week.
