BNL’s Nonproliferation and National Security Department (NN) contributes to U.S. nuclear security and safeguards efforts by assisting in the development, analysis and assessment of policies that strengthen international regimes, collecting and analyzing data to identify trends and threats to the U.S. and international communities, developing and implementing new technologies to address existing and emerging threats, and strengthening the domestic and international institutions that form the framework of the nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear security regimes through training and engagement. The Radiation Detection and Emerging Safeguards Technologies Group pursues research and development in radiation detection technology and applications in security, safeguards, and healthcare. In addition, the Group also provides engineering support test and evaluation of radiation detection equipment to address sponsors’ needs in operation and research. The Application Engineer will work on funded projects under the supervision of the Group Leader and other Department Leaders.
The Nonproliferation and National Security Department seeks an Application Engineer with knowledge and experience in electronic circuit design. The Application Engineer will participate in ongoing research leading to design and test of data acquisition systems for various radiation detection devices and systems and contribute to future proposals to develop new research opportunities in the group. The successful candidate is also expected to provide engineering support for test and evaluation of radiation detector test campaigns. The candidate is also responsible to give presentations at BNL lectures, conferences and project review meetings to discuss research results. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the electronic design and test of data acquisition systems for radiation detection applications in national security, nuclear safeguards and healthcare
- Support and participate in the testing and evaluation of custom-built and commercial radiation detection systems at the laboratory and at experiment sites
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in any one of the following; Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics or related discipline
- Minimum of three (3) years progressively responsible full time related work experience including supporting scientific research programs following established methods and standards for investigation and experimentation.
- Experience in printed circuit board schematic and layout design
- Knowledge of analog, digital and mixed-signal circuits
- Working experience in FPGA-based design including coding in VHDL or Verilog
- Experience in microcontroller-based design including firmware development
- Knowledge of and hands-on experience in I/O and communication standards, e.g., SPI, I2C, USB 2/3, PCIe, Gigabit Ethernet and AXI
- Application programming experience in C/C++ or Python in Linux and/or Windows
- Clear and concise oral and written communication and presentation skills
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Master’s degree in related discpline
- Working knowledge and experience in electronics manufacturing and production test
- Knowledge of radiation detectors and radiation detection systems
- Experience in the latest Xilinx/Altera FPGAs or SOC FPGAs
- Experience in ARM and/or RISC-V MCUs
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
The main scope of work will take place in an office environment as well as in the laboratories. The successful candidate must be able to conduct the activities safely in BNL laboratories by completing required trainings, interpreting laboratory safety information postings, and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
