Archery Instructor Internship/ Cabin Counselor
– Camp Cobbossee for Boys –
Thanks for your interest in working at Camp Cobbossee!
Cobbossee is a 4-week, 2-session sleepaway summer camp in Maine. The dates for this position run from June 7th to August 14th, 2021. For more on what summer camping actually is, see the very bottom of this document!
Cobbossee is looking for a few talented and motivated Archery Instructors / Counselors. Cut into our beautiful woodland is the Cobbossee archery range. The 30M range can have a group of 4-8 on the firing line at any time, with an assortment of different bows and targets for the boys to hone their shooting on. Kids love archery at Cobbossee and every boy will cycle through the Archery Range in his time at Cobbossee. Through a safe and professionally run program, boys at Cobbossee learn the essential safety and beginner techniques of target shooting with a bow through you, the motivated and charismatic instructor.
If you’re relatively new to archery but are keen to learn more about coaching, we provide a two-day certification course in instructing and equipment management as well as then providing an extra three days training on our equipment as a team. We don’t ask anything of you that you haven’t been trained on.
We want archery to be a fun place and this means game and program preparation ahead of the children’s arrival. This means you only have to learn the basics and become proficient at this, if you’re new to Archery this job will take those basics and build you up to a proficient instructor. You will also be a part of the ‘Adventure team’.
The Adventure Team is made up of six ropes staff, two mountain bikers and two archers. We are a unit who operate all of the adventure activities at camp under the Head and Assistant Head of Adventure . This means stepping up on overnight camping trips setting up equipment and more responsibility around fire management. We train on these things so you can be proficient and safe. There is a lot of variety associated with the Adventure team, alongside your role you would likely also have opportunities to assist at climbing, tomahawk throwing, mountain biking or fire-building sessions. We run the program as a team and love to mix things up, variety is the spice of life!
At Adventure we push kids outside of their comfort zone. We do this safely and in a supportive way. The program area we run has real scope for danger which is why we set our standards high in safety procedure which then provides us with enormous scope for fun!
Alongside the activity role in the day an Archery Instructor/Counselor lives in a bunk with (and cares for!) a set of campers and works at their activity area during the day, teaching their passion to a range of age groups and skill sets, all under the watchful eye of our Adventure program head Jonesy. This position is also responsible for the upkeep of the equipment, inter-camp competitions and generally contributing to a strong team. You want to belong to an amazing crew and do good work all summer? The Adventure team is for you.
Ever wanted to see New England? Well, in addition to your salary and bonus, Cobbossee will provide you with a travel stipend so you can get out to Maine and away from your home town or school without spending your own money.
Room and board is also provided all summer, so you won’t spend any of your own money on living expenses (the food is famously good at Cobbossee. No, really, it is).
Further, days off and nights out are spent with other adventurous folks like you. Our counselors make lifelong friends at Cobbossee. Many return year-to-year.
OTHER POSSIBLE BENEFITS
We can configure your employment this summer as job training, a structured internship, or just a really great summer job. Our director, Josh Holland, is a former academic and can make sure your experience is converted into internship credit if that’s what you want. If you are in any child-centered major (teaching, education, coaching) or any sports-related field (sports management, kinesiology, movement, physical-education), this experience can be one of the best paid internships you can find.
THE BOTTOM LINE
“Summer jobs” are often seen as throwaway jobs. Not here. This job is going to challenge you. You are going to give of yourself, have an absolute blast, develop strong friendships with your peers, and really make a difference in young people’s lives.
You should come work at Cobbossee because we are one of the best. We develop counselors like we develop campers. You will change for the better. It will truly be the summer of your life.

For anyone not familiar with the huge world of sleepaway camps in New England, it works as follows:
All over the northeast each summer, families send their boys and girls up to New England to spend anywhere from a couple weeks to the entire summer at a sleepaway camp. Sometimes people who are not from the east coast see this as a strange choice, maybe even a mean choice! “Don’t they like their kids?” the question goes. Of course they do. They love their children and it’s hard for them to be away from them for the time they are at camp. But parents sacrifice time with their kids in the summer because summer camp is really good for young children. Camp (especially longer-term camps of four-to-eight weeks) teaches children independence, self-reliance, and confidence through the teaching of new skills, improving at sports, and living away from home. It isn’t always easy. But it is worth it! Crucial to this process are you, the counselor. You become like a family member to the campers in your cabin. In fact, you will find yourself developing really fast yourself, just so you can be the best counselor and instructor possible for your kids! It is rewarding, challenging, and transformative work to care for campers.
