Carousel Connections, a six week summer residential program supporting teenagers and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, resides on the campus of Haverford College each summer.
At Carousel Connections, individuals are provided opportunities to learn, maintain, and improve skills through participation in vocational training, independent living mentoring, and recreational activities. Program goals include: opportunities that provide life skills training to further support independence and build self confidence, opportunities that provide vocational training experiences that may be used in employment, authentic and inclusive living/learning experiences and activities, and an experience with community living on a college campus.
Participants who attend Carousel Connections hold community campus jobs and staff mentors are “job coaches” and positive role models during the work day. Participants live with roommates and supervising staff while enjoying the daily rhythms of apartment living (waking up each day and organizing the bedroom, assisting with meal preparations, heading out to work jobs, performing household chores, shopping for food, laundry, enjoying recreational activities with friends).
We hire an energetic and dynamic summer staff to be members of our Carousel Connections staff. These paid positions provide a unique learning experience! Staff rotates on daily shifts (morning, day, afternoon, evening) and support individuals who attend with apartment living, job training, and leisure time for a total of 35 – 40 hours per week. Wonderful partnerships develop! Program dates are June 18th to July 31st. Training takes place prior to the summer season and support/mentoring is available at all times by various professional roles (occupational therapist, clinical therapist, educators, and more!). Staff housing is provided. This is an opportunity to build valuable skills in a community based setting.
