*Not remote*Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE) is hiring entry-level campaign staff to help protect New York’s air, land, and water quality. Work with us full-time *benefits* or part time to promote science-based, environmentally sound legislation and make an impact on long term sustainability in New York. By publicly educating the community, CCE has made a commitment to educating communities since 1985. We also provide internships at part-time or full time as well!
Work to pass EPR or Extended Producer Responsibility! Right now, New York is suffering from a growing solid waste and recycling crisis. Recycling markets in China and elsewhere have closed their doors to the U.S., forcing us to start managing our long-standing solid waste problems. As a result, municipal recycling costs have skyrocketed, recycling rates have declined, and our environment and public health are suffering from pollution.
New York generates more than 17 million tons of municipal solid waste annually. An estimated 40 percent of that waste is composed of product packaging and paper products, such as plastic containers, steel cans, plastic film, glass bottles, newspaper, and cardboard. Unfortunately, less than half of this waste is being recycled properly.
Municipalities were once getting paid for recyclables, however now, they must pay to recycle. Many municipalities face recycling costs in the hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars per year. The increased cost to local governments is estimated to total 60 million across NYS in 2020.
This is why we must work to pass EPR, or Extended Producer Responsibility, so that the cost of recycling is shifted over to the manufacturer, and not put on us the taxpayer and struggling municipalities that do not have the funds to take on the waste of manufacturers.
We are looking for candidates that possess strong oral and written communication skills and have a passion for environmental and social justice issues. People that are also looking for a job that provides a lot of learning in the environmental and political spheres. If this is you, apply today! Previous campaign experience is preferred, but not mandatory.
CCE’s campaign staff is responsible for engaging with community members, building our grassroots network, and getting our supporters involved. You will work on a home-to-home basis collecting petition signatures, fundraising, and generating public comments to key elected officials to get the legislation passed! Qualified applicants will be energetic and outgoing, with a real commitment to environmental protection.
