Double Up Food Bucks VISTAs will work with community partners and food access leaders to create a more equitable local food economy for producers, suppliers, and customers. They will use the experience and expertise of their host sites to learn about the unique barriers in their communities and create connections to address those barriers. They will also find ways to encourage healthier eating habits and extoll the value of eating seasonally and locally, not only on their health but the health of their community as well.
Double Up Food Bucks VISTA members will be focusing heavily on conducting barriers assessments in regard to food access, creating volunteer management plans for long-term sustainability, connecting community partners together in an effort to address food insecurity and poverty in a more holistic manner, creating economic opportunities for farmers and local food producers.
COMMUNITY NEED ADDRESSED
Double Up Food Bucks addresses access to healthy foods by offering SNAP participants a $1 for $1 match to buy locally grown produce at participating farmers markets, mobile markets, small retail, and grocery locations. Our VISTA members will be serving in areas with high food insecurity to connect SNAP participants to community services, with a high focus on individuals and families experiencing food insecurity for the first time due to the pandemic.
The goal of this program is to increase food security, improve access to healthy foods, and create more opportunities for farmers to sell their produce locally.
