DESCRIPTION
This is a responsible professional position assigned to the Virology Section of the Bureau Public Health Laboratories. Duties are related to the testing of specimens. Considerable independent judgment is required to plan and organize the work of this section. Duties are performed under general supervision. The incumbent must possess a current State of Florida clinical or public health laboratory technician license.
- Prepares, processes, and performs moderately complex assays on submitted clinical specimens.
- Prepares stock reagents, moderately complex reagents, and media for use in virology procedures and maintains a schedule of preparations and inventory records for reagents.
- Performs quality assurance procedures and quality control testing.
- Accessions submitted clinical samples, including assigning laboratory numbers to specimens and monitors specimen quality.
- Maintains selected laboratory supplies and monitors function and provides preventative maintenance of selected laboratory equipment.
- Analyzes and reports testing results.
- Trains technicians on these procedures.
- Performs related duties as required.
- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
- Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques used in analysis and testing.
- Knowledge of procedures, techniques & equipment used in lab testing and analysis.
- Skill in the use of lab equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
- Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
- PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- 6 months minimum of classroom or non-classroom laboratory experience
- PREFERRED EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical or biological sciences
- LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
- State of Florida Clinical or Public Health Laboratory Technician License, or are able to obtain such license within 90 days of hire
