Cures Start Here. At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutch’s pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer. An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation’s first cancer prevention research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Women’s Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Careers Start Here.

At Fred Hutch, we believe that the innovation, collaboration, and rigor that result from diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission of eliminating cancer and related diseases. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems. Fred Hutch is in pursuit of becoming an antiracist organization. We are committed to ensuring that all candidates hired share our commitment to diversity, antiracism, and inclusion.

The Fred Hutch Immunotherapy Integrated Research Center (IIRC) seeks qualified candidates for its two-year Immunotherapy Physician Scientist Program. A successful applicant will be an MD or MD/PhD who is committed to pioneering major advances in medical practice through research. Applicants should be interested in an aspect of immuno-oncology relevant to the IIRC, as well as the development of therapies that modulate the immune system. Immunotherapy Physician Scientists will advance their academic careers by performing immuno-oncology research with access to state-of-the-art facilities and working with expert faculty mentors who are members in the Immunotherapy Integrated Research Center. Click here to view IIRC Faculty.

The IIRC will support the incumbent’s salary and lab expenses for two years of translational research training. However, the Physician Scientist is strongly encouraged to work with their mentor to apply for outside funding during their first year.

  • Candidates may wish to identify a mentor and potential research projects prior to arriving at Fred Hutch. The Physician Scientist will develop a research project under the guidance of the mentor. Projects may be predominantly clinical, correlative or laboratory-based, but must be focused on the development and/or improvement of cancer immunotherapy. Candidates may identify projects that require guidance from more than one mentor, as long as one mentor is a Physician Scientist faculty member of the IIRC.
  • The Physician Scientist will participate for 3-6 months in patient care on inpatient and outpatient cancer immunotherapy services at the University of Washington (UW), Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and/or Seattle Children’s (SC) Hospital. They will work closely with both clinical and research teams, developing the skills necessary to manage patients enrolled in the wide range of immunotherapy trials being conducted across the Fred Hutch/UW/SC Cancer Consortium.

Fred Hutch is a world leader in immunotherapy. An exceptionally strong history of research in immunotherapy (FH Immunotherapy) and bone marrow transplantation (FH Transplantation) informs and guides progress towards the development of the next generation of curative treatments. Available resources include outstanding staff, facilities and the infrastructure necessary to support translational immunotherapy research:

  • The first cancer clinic dedicated exclusively to cellular immunotherapy clinical trials (Bezos Family Immuno-Therapy Clinic) is located at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, an outpatient clinic on the Fred Hutch campus.
  • Extensive expertise and facilities are available for the manufacture of clinical grade products, including cellular, biologic and DNA-based therapeutics (Therapeutic Products.) These facilities support more than 25 investigator- initiated, Phase I clinical trials each year.
  • A large network of shared resource laboratories (Shared Resources) is staffed by experts, who can assist in cutting-edge experimental design, assay development and statistical analyses.

Qualifications

  • MD, MD/PhD or foreign equivalent
  • Completion of fellowship in Hematology/Oncology (adult and/or pediatric) or foreign equivalent
  • Demonstrated track record of academic achievement, including relevant publications
  • Demonstrated interest and clinical or laboratory accomplishments in cancer immunotherapy and/or immunology research

Application Instructions

Please submit the following:

  • CV
  • Statement of clinical and research interests
  • Personal statement outlining your interests in the fellowship program
  • Diversity, inclusion and mentoring statement describing your past contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and your future plans for continuing these efforts (one page or less)
  • Confidential letters of recommendation from at least three references, submitted via Interfolio

Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis but should be received no later than May 30, 2021.
