We are recruiting for a Spring Co-op position in the Novel Human Genetics Research Unit (NHG-RU) at GSK’s Upper Providence research facility in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. Genetic information from various sources are providing scientists with greater insight into how our genes cause and protect us from disease. The NHG-RU focuses on drug targets which have a strong genetic link to certain diseases. The successful candidate will work within the in vitro biology group of the NHG-RU which focuses on opportunities targeting and interrogating neurodegeneration through cellular and in vivo models to develop new medicines in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
This position will allow the selected candidate to gain experience of the drug discovery process in a scientifically innovative environment. Under supervision, this individual will plan, execute, and present data from in vitro experiments meant to aid in understanding biological mechanisms of neurodegeneration. Experimental work may include isolation and culture of primary, iPSC, and established neural cell lines, pharmacological and genetic manipulation, and pharmacodynamic and biomarker assay development measuring relevant signaling pathways using Western blot, high sensitivity immunoassays (ELISA, MSD, SIMOA), high content cellular imaging, and functional mechanistic assays among other in vitro techniques. This position will run for a minimum of 6 months with the option to extend up to 12 months if the student’s schedule permits.
- Pursuing a MS, PhD degree in cell biology, molecular biology, pharmacology, neuroscience, or a related biomedical discipline.
- Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the 4-12 month co-op.
- Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.
- Pursuing or having completed an advanced post-graduate biomedical degree (MS, PhD).
- Basic understanding of pharmacology, biology, neuroscience.
- Relevant laboratory experience in routine biochemical, cell biology, cell culture, and cell-based assay techniques.
- Familiarization with high content cellular imaging or phenotypic cellular assay development desirable.
- Successfully pass a drug screen and background check prior to assignment target start date.
- Provide your own funding for relocation and commuting.
