Members will work primarily on mountain bike trail construction and maintenance within the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area. Dependent upon service project selection members may also perform some habitat restoration, and exotic weed treatment. Other restoration efforts may include fence installation or removal, cleanup of illegal dumping sites, and unauthorized motorized route decommissioning. The ideal candidate will enjoy working outdoors in challenging conditions, have prior experience camping, and share the belief that everyone should feel safe and included in the conservation community. They will also share the mission to be a part of an affirming crew culture with members of diverse identities, experiences, and backgrounds.
We seek AmeriCorps Crew Members (4) to work on a diverse scope of conservation projects in some of Nevada’s most beautiful locales.
Members will report to Great Basin Institute’s Las Vegas Office and may serve in the field on 4-day tours, 8-day tours, or a mixture of the two, in an outdoor setting, and camping in the field for the duration of each tour. Camping locations will be primarily front country settings where there is ready access to crew vehicles, however members often camp in undeveloped sites without access to water or restroom facilities where members practice Leave No Trace techniques for camp etiquette. Members may also camp in backcountry settings where a base-camp is established several miles from vehicles in remote locations. Work may be completed outside of the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area, but will be focused in this region.
Typical work days are 10 hours long from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Schedules will be dictated by project site and distance from the field station. All schedules are subject to change due to unpredictable circumstances.
As an employee of Great Basin Institute’s Nevada Conservation Corps Program (NCC) program, the Employee is expected to satisfactorily complete the following tasks:
Adherence to the rules and regulations specified in the Nevada Conservation Corps Crew Member Handbook;
Adhere to daily/weekly work schedules that are subject to change in response to project needs;
Maintain a positive and professional attitude while working on challenging and diverse projects
Exemplify strong work ethic, professionalism, and sound judgment;
Communicate effectively with a small team and work collaboratively to ensure project completion and quality
Understand and abide by all NCC policies and procedures;
Camp in remote locations for up to 7 nights with limited facilities
Drive a 4×4 work vehicle safely and on rugged terrain
Willingness to be flexible to changing work environments

Compensation and Benefits:This is an AmeriCorps position; candidates will receive a living stipend dependent on their length of service. The living stipend is a fixed amount, not an hourly wage or a salary. The stipend is paid to members in bi-weekly installments throughout their term of service. Upon completion of AmeriCorps service members shall receive an additional education award also dependent on the length of service that can be used for paying off student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college.
3- Month / 450 hour Position: $4,400 ($676.92 biweekly before taxes)
3- Month / 450 hour Position $1,638.89
Per Diem:$7.25/day spent in the field. This is in addition to your Living Allowance and on average is $58.00 biweekly.
Housing Stipend: max $300 (3 months); this is in addition to your Living Allowance and on average is $50.00 biweekly.
Limited Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance will be completely paid for at no cost to you by the Great Basin Institute.
Student Loan Forbearance:
If you are currently paying on any federal student loans you have the option to put those loans into forbearance during your time as an AmeriCorps volunteer, that will allow you to cease payments while serving.
Interest Accrual Repayment:
As AmeriCorps alum, you are eligible to have the National Service Trust pay all or a portion of the interest that accumulated on your qualified student loan(s) during your term of service. These payments are made in addition to the Education Award, and are not deducted from your Education Award balance. To be eligible to have accrued interest paid: The loan must have been placed in forbearance for the service period, and you must have successfully completed a term of service and received an Education Award.
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Eligibility:
AmeriCorps Volunteers qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The Nevada Conservation Corps will provide you documentation in proving that you qualify for SNAP.
Educational Affiliation Agreements (College Credit):
The Nevada Conservation Corps will take part in Affiliation Agreements with your university in order to allow you to receive college credit hours for your term of service.
Must maintain a positive and professional attitude at all times while providing service.
Be able to communicate effectively with members, crew leaders, NCC staff, and project partners.
Possess the willingness and ability to work and camp up to seven nights in a row, in a wilderness setting, in all weather conditions, without formal restroom facilities or running water.
Be able to lift 25lbs continuously and 50lbs occasionally
Be at least 17 years of age
Be a US citizen
Must possess a high school diploma or GED
Must be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time education awards).*
