The Large Scale Integrated Photonics Lab at Hewlett Packard Labs has an immediate opening for a qualified post-doc with experience in silicon photonics to support our team. This role will be responsible for designing ultra low-loss photonic devices for data communication circuits and layout of these novel designs, documenting the code-base used to simulate and optimize new grating coupler designs, and summarize the work in academic papers. The grating coupler designs are intended to be compatible with the fabrication processes provided by the world class volume fabs HPE partners with. This role will collaborate heavily with a multi-disciplinary team of device and circuit designers and process engineers. We strongly believe that state-of-the-art automated design techniques such as the adjoint method will play an important role in the design our next generation photonic devices. Consequently, familiarity with state-of-the-art photonic design optimization routines are desired.In our team, all the software related to design, measurement and data analysis is written in python, hence, a strong background with Python is preferred. Knowledge of the CMOS process flow and familiarity with device modeling software such as a Lumerical and prior experience with scripted photonic layout software are required. In addition, the post-doc will be responsible to incorporate the gradient-descent adjoint design methodology in more general state-of-the-art machine learning architectures, allowing for simulation sample efficient global optimization of photonic devices.Qualifications and Education Requirements: * Currently working towards obtaining a PhD in Engineering, Physics, Photonics or equivalent. * Strong knowledge and familiarity of photonic design and layout tools * Strong writing and verbal communication skills * Familiarity with Adjoint optimization * Experience in designing grating couplers * Expert in Python coding * Expert in Lumerical and other photonic layout and design tools. * Experience with recent machine learning techniquesWe offer:• A competitive salary and extensive social benefits• Diverse and dynamic work environment• Work-life balance and support for career development • An amazing life inside the element!
