Spend a year serving at a social justice non-profit, while exploring living in community, living simply & sustainably, and exploring spirituality. We are seeking people who wish to bridge social justice in practice with social justice theory; build leadership and employable skills in social justice; and explore the LVC values of living in community, simply and sustainably, to build communication across differences.
The Lutheran Volunteer Corps is a community of faith uniting people to work for peace with justice. We pursue our mission by placing adults 21+ (“volunteers”) in full-time service positions at social-justice organizations for one or two years. All LVC Volunteers are encouraged to live into LVC’s core spiritual practices of living simply and sustainably in intentional community while serving the cause of peace with justice. In its program, LVC places a particular emphasis on racism, oppression, and privilege and how these contribute to ongoing injustice in our society. It also explores the role that spirituality plays in inspiring and sustaining work in the quest for peace with justice. Successful applicants will be comfortable and eager to engage diverse constituents to advance LVC’s inclusive aspirations. LVC has a small staff and serves approximately 50 service volunteers annually.
LVC places Volunteers in nonprofits (placements) across the United States in Baltimore, MD; Minneapolis, MN; St. Paul, MN; Omaha, NE; Washington, DC; and Wilmington, DE. Serving alongside those in their placements, LVC Volunteers actively respond to the gifts and needs of their community members. Partnering with their placements, LVC Volunteers provide direct service, community organizing, indirect service, advocacy and public policy. LVC’s positions change annually, and often include: Addiction/Recovery, Education, Environment, Food Justice, Gender Equality, Health Care, HIV/AIDS, Housing, Immigration, International Solidarity, Legal Aid, LGBTQ Equality, Refugee Services, Senior Services, Supporting people with Disabilities, Women’ s Rights, Workers’ Rights, Youth Engagement, and more. While there are quality placements in every round, those who apply early will have a greater selection of positions.
