We are seeking a motivated and creative Public Relations Intern to support strategic communications, digital engagement, and public outreach efforts. This internship offers hands-on experience in public relations, digital media strategy, content creation, stakeholder engagement, and advocacy communications. The ideal candidate is a strong writer, highly organized, politically aware, and interested in how media and public affairs shape public opinion and policy conversations.

This internship is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in public affairs, communications, public relations, political science, journalism, marketing, or digital media.

Key Responsibilities:

Public Affairs Support

  • Assist with research on public policy, legislative issues, stakeholder organizations, and current events
  • Monitor media coverage and compile daily or weekly news summaries
  • Support grassroots and stakeholder outreach initiatives
  • Help draft talking points, briefing materials, fact sheets, and advocacy content
  • Assist with event coordination, coalition communications, and public engagement efforts

Digital & New Media

  • Create and schedule social media content across platforms including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, and TikTok
  • Assist with digital advertising campaigns and audience targeting
  • Develop graphics, short-form videos, reels, and multimedia content
  • Track social media analytics and prepare performance reports
  • Monitor digital trends, emerging platforms, and online conversations relevant to clients or campaigns

Communications & Content Creation

  • Draft social media copy, email newsletters, blogs, press releases, and website content
  • Assist in maintaining consistent messaging and brand voice
  • Support rapid-response communications and campaign messaging
  • Help capture photo and video content during events and community activities

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with major social media platforms and digital trends
  • Basic graphic design and video editing experience preferred (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, etc.)
  • Interest in public affairs, government, advocacy, media relations, or community engagement
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Positive attitude, creativity, and willingness to learn

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Meta Business Suite or digital advertising platforms
  • Basic photography or videography skills
  • Knowledge of Michigan public policy, local government, or advocacy campaigns
  • Familiarity with email marketing platforms and social media analytics tools

Internship Details

  • Part-time or full-time opportunities available
  • Flexible schedule based on academic commitments
  • Hybrid position – minimal in-person engagements, but the ability to travel is a requirement
  • Paid internship: $17 an hour
