The Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) is one of the longest running summer programs of its kind! The Medical College of Wisconsin has hosted hundreds of participants through this program who have since made significant contributions to science/humanity through their positions as researchers, educators, industry & health professionals, government leaders, and clinicians. Our participants come from all areas of the country and bring a unique set of skills and experiences that they are able to apply and further build upon. Students gain valuable research experience, refined critical thinking skills, increase their social and professional networks, and are introduced to various disciplines of science.

The stipend amount equates to roughly $9.11/hour, as participants work 43, 8-hour days, as part of the program. In addition to the $3,500 stipend, we provide fully-furnished housing accommodations that are located within a respectable walking distance from the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center where MCW is located. The housing complex is a newer structure that features full kitchens w/stainless steel appliances, central air/heating, cable/internet, parking, and on-site laundry facilities.

SPUR participants are reviewed and chosen by one of our faculty researchers and will work to contribute to preexisting project. Some participants will have more wet lab experience, working with animals and human blood/tissue, while others will be more focused on data gathering/analyzing. We provide opportunities for participants to learn about research at MCW through weekly symposiums, and provide networking opportunities through social events throughout the summer.

Handshake will redirect you to complete our online application located at www.mcw.edu/spur. In addition to the application, you will also need to submit two (2) letters of recommendation and an official transcript from your current college/university. Those that write your letters of recommendation can submit their letter via email to spur@mcw.edu. If your school offers an electronic form of transcript submission, it can be sent to spur@mcw.edu as well. Otherwise, hard copies of transcripts or letters of recommendation can be sent by mail to:

SPUR have averaged 37 participants per summer that represent every major region of the United States over the last 5 years. We are one of the few programs in the country that can host international students (F1 visas only). Participation in SPUR is intended for students who are currently enrolled in a non-online degree program at an accredited U.S.-based college/university and intend to pursue health-related graduate and/or professional school studies. All participants must be 18 years or older, and will need to successfully pass a background check as well as provide proof of insurance coverage is selected.
