MEND is seeking an energetic, enthusiastic, talented and self-motivated individual who is willing to take on a variety of responsibilities to help it continue to grow its mission and impact. While the Operations Manager will primarily be responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the Fresh Food Hub, a 4000+ sq. ft. facility in Orange, NJ, to support a network of 20 food pantries, a successful candidate will be excited to have a varied set of responsibilities.
Key duties include:
Food Procurement (40%)
Manage all aspects of food procurement (through donations and purchasing), including: identifying and building relationships with current and new food supply partners, purchasing food and/or coordinating food donations, scheduling food deliveries with vendors and donors, managing and communicating current inventory, working within budgets to secure the highest quality food at the lowest possible price, tracking orders/food drives, and submitting invoices for payment. Effective communication with the Executive Director and Programming Coordinator is essential to ensure alignment with the food needs of member pantries and community partners, and to ensure the coordination of all on-site volunteer activities.
Facilities Management (35%)
Oversee the operations of a 4,000 square foot Fresh Food Hub, including: opening and closing the building, managing the delivery and pick up schedules, maintaining compliance with all building and food safety requirements, coordinating equipment and facility repairs, occasionally transporting food and other essentials using the MEND cargo van; and keeping the space neat and supplies stocked.
Administrative Support (25%)
Assist MEND leadership with all financial, administrative, and facilities functions of the organization. This includes mail handling, donation and invoice processing, database management, supporting MEND committees and the MEND Board of Trustees, and keeping all nonprofit filings and registrations current.
Qualifications • An entrepreneurial and creative approach to problem solving and strategy setting that strengthens internal operations and builds resilience in systems and processes, in ways that support and align with programmatic strategies. • Experience identifying and analyzing data from a variety of sources to support organizational leadership in decision-making and planning. • A team player who possesses a belief that all people are entitled to access to fresh and healthy food, and a has a firm commitment to racial, social, and food justice and sovereignty. • A commitment to continued learning, with the goal of staying up-to-date on current developments and best practices in the field. • B.S./B.A. in business, supply chain management, logistics, food systems or policy, or a related field, or equivalent experience. • Strong communication and team building skills. • Proficient with all Microsoft Office products. • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds consistently, and up to 80 pounds occasionally. • Clean driving record and willingness to drive company van. 3
PREFERRED SKILLS ● 3-5 years of warehouse, supply chain, customer service and/or food-related experience. ● Experience in community building and/or grass roots volunteering or nonprofit work.
ADDITIONAL NOTES ● Some aspects of this job may be performed remotely during COVID-19, but in-person presence will be required at the Hub at least 3 days a week. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required (primarily to support MEND committee or Board meetings, or events). COVID-19 protocols are in place – including the supply of masks, gloves and hand-sanitizer, as well as a commitment to social distancing and limited numbers of volunteers/staff on hand at one time. ● This is a newly-created role, and is grant-funded for a 1-year period. The hope is to obtain additional funding to extend employment beyond that time frame. ● Preference will be given to residents of towns where MEND pantries are located (Bloomfield, East Orange Irvington, Maplewood, Montclair, Newark, Orange, South Orange, West Orange), as well as to candidates who are bi- or multi-lingual.
