Responsibilities: As part of a joint program, the Monmouth County Park System and the New Jersey Water Supply Authority are looking for 2 applicants to lead an education-based boat inspection program for aquatic invasive plant species at the Manasquan Reservoir boat launch. Many aquatic invasive species (AIS) spread between water bodies by travelling on recreational boats and fishing equipment. Applicant will be responsible for performing voluntary boat inspections, inspecting watercraft for the presence of and removing any aquatic invasive plants, conducting boater surveys to collect data on invasive species spread, and educating boaters on AIS and how they can help protect their local waterbody. The applicant will be trained by staff and learn aquatic invasive species recognition, gain outreach and educational experience, and learn about AIS management.
This position will include 24 hrs/week of boater surveys on holidays and weekends. Remaining hours will be filled by performing park management duties as a seasonal park ranger. Applicant will also fill weekday hours by helping NJWSA staff with other waterbody management duties such as water sampling, in-situ data collection, and aquatic vegetation surveys.
A student can also use this position and the collected data as a paid internship for any college or university credit as necessary.
Qualifications: Must have good verbal communication skills and be comfortable working with the public in outdoor environments. Must be available to work weekends and holidays on a regular basis throughout employment. Willingness to work long days outdoors, occasionally on a boat. Experience with lawn mower and outdoor tools a plus. Preference will be given to applicants pursuing a degree related to environmental science.
