A research opportunity is currently available within the Influenza Division (ID) Epidemiology and Prevention Branch (EPB), in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia. ID provides the scientific and programmatic foundation and leadership for the diagnosis, prevention, and control of influenza domestically and internationally.
The Applied Research and Modeling (ARM) Team, Epidemiology and Prevention Branch, Influenza Division, at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is seeking a motivated medical, nursing or physician’s assistant student with clinical knowledge. This appointment will offer a unique opportunity to train with a multi-disciplinary team focusing on characterizing the clinical epidemiology of severe influenza and COVID-19 in the United States.
The Influenza Division provides the scientific and programmatic foundation and leadership for the diagnosis, prevention, and control of influenza domestically and internationally. The ARM team supports the Influenza Hospitalization Surveillance Network, or FluSurv-NET. The FluSurv-NET platform is used to describe clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza in the United States.
The selected participant would train with mentors on the team in projects that involve validating novel methods to use natural language processing to correctly classify data from free text fields. Specifically, the participant will review lists of underlying conditions to ensure that automated data algorithms appropriately identified clinically relevant underlying conditions and assigned them to correct categories. The participant will also perform a literature review and be involved in creating clinically relevant groupings of ICD-CM-9 and ICD-CM-10 discharge diagnoses codes into categories of acute and chronic complications associated with influenza and COVID-19.
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Summer 2021
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
