The Benning Martin Army Community Hospital (BMACH) manages the health of thousands of military soldiers and their dependents. BMACH provides quality, safe, and appropriate health care using customer-focused processes to improve the overall health of the community and to be the benchmark for quality healthcare delivery across the Army Medical Department.BMACH will be offering an ORISE learning opportunity in the Office of Clinical Research Support (OCRS) within the Human Research Protections Program (HRPP). This project will provide a unique experience that will allow the participant to develop skills in data management as it relates to human subjects research; the management of data has become increasingly important in research from the perspectives of feasibility, ethics, and validity. The facility provides care under a number of specialties and also has teaching programs such as the Family Medicine Residency Program. The participant will have the opportunity to interact with a diverse population of researchers, administrative personnel, and other staff at BMACH in support of military research to improve the health, well-being, strength, and readiness of soldiers in the United States Military.Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will learn about the essential aspects of a successful role in supporting a number of efforts for biomedical research studies at Benning Martin Army Community Hospital (BMACH). They will also have the opportunity to engage in an environment that will expose them to functions of the Office of Clinical Research Support within the Human Research Protections Program (HRPP) as it relates to the diverse environment of military research at BMACH. The participant will collaborate with other military entities within the Department of Defense, thus broadening their experience not only functions of data management that relate to the conduct of clinical research but also components of data management under the umbrella of program management. The participant will engage in activities that include data quality assurance checks, management of research data, creation of new summary variables, creation of datasets, creation of data tables for reports and papers.Skills gained in this environment could potentially include all or some of the below.Learn training techniques for technology, applications and other software used in the management of data for biomedical research.Development of interpersonal skills and the ability to work in an extremely variable environment.Develop and/or strengthen skills in organizing, analyzing, managing time, setting priorities and meeting deadlines for multiple tasks.Learn proper construction of communications within a military environment.Skills in Data Management within a Biomedical Research EnvironmentDesign data collection forms and procedures for research projects.Coordinate data validation checks and reports to identify potential problem data.
