For more than a decade, Polaris has assisted thousands of victims and survivors through the U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline and built the largest known U.S. data set on the crime. With the guidance of survivors, and working with public and private-sector partners, we use that data to understand and improve the way trafficking is identified, how victims and survivors are assisted, and how we can prevent this abuse at the scale of the problem – 25 million people worldwide robbed of the fundamental right to choose how they live and work.
About the Opportunity
Polaris is integrating a complex systems approach into our work. Our goal is to tackle the structures, attitudes, and power dynamics that make hundreds of thousands of people vulnerable to sex and labor trafficking to enable us to shift the energy of the anti-trafficking movement to begin to prevent victimization before it happens.
Polaris is seeking consultants with community outreach expertise to contribute to the implementation of outreach to participants and partner organizations to encourage participation in Polaris’ first National Survivor Study (NSS). Polaris collects data from the operation of the National Human Trafficking Hotline but is now in the process of designing and implementing a large-scale mixed-methods study (with multiple languages) that will employ trauma-informed and survivor-focused strategies to collect data from and with survivors. The Outreach Coordinator will manage an outreach strategy to survivor leaders, anti-human trafficking professionals, and aligned organizations to leverage their networks to engage survivors to participate from many previously under-represented groups. This will include identifying critical relationships needed in selected communities nationwide to achieve the goal of broad participation. The Outreach Coordinator will be the key point of contact between community leaders and the NSS team. S/he will collaborate closely with colleagues from the Learning, Innovation, and Data Systems team at Polaris as well as our Survivor Engagement Advisor and the research team. The ideal candidate is comfortable in an extremely fast-paced and dynamic environment and is a self-starter who has excellent attention to detail and organizational skills as well as a drive to excel. The Outreach Coordinator is an effective communicator, can build relationships with ease, is passionate about the fight to eradicate human trafficking, and has a demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a group.
- Work closely with Polaris’s Survivor Empowerment Initiative and manage outreach to a variety of partners to promote the participation of their networks of survivors in the NSS.
- Develop outreach materials to reach out to different stakeholders in multiple languages.
- Manage outreach to a database of interested potential participants at different stages of the data collection process.
- Other tasks as required.
This position does not authorize/require the consultant to have decision-making authority on the final work product.
- Minimum two to three (2-3) years years’ of progressively responsible professional work experience in community organizing, advocacy or social services
- Experience doing outreach and/or advocacy work with survivors of trauma and/or vulnerable populations such as communities of color, immigrants, native populations, people with disabilities, or LGBTQ communities
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills
- Emotional maturity and demonstrated discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information
- Working proficiency in English
- Candidates having lived experience with human trafficking strongly preferred
- Academic or professional knowledge of human trafficking, labor rights, or related social issues
- Skilled in multi-stakeholder engagement processes
- Previous experience working on state- or federal-level community organizing and movement building efforts
- Experience in participatory research methodologies as well as trauma-informed research strategies
- Experience in developing sampling strategies for hard to reach populations
- Spanish or Mandarin language fluency
This position requires approximately 5-20 days Level of Effort (LOE), from June through December 2021 The period of performance may be extended, depending on the need. The consultant can work remotely from his/her location. If conditions allow, occasional short-term travel may be required to Polaris’s office in Washington DC.
