THE STEPPINGSTONE SUMMER INTERNSHIP
Summer 2021 Position Description
Applications due March 1, 2021
The summer internship at Steppingstone provides talented and committed college students with an opportunity to learn about careers in education, educational access, and the nonprofit sector through firsthand experience working with children in an academically rigorous environment. This internship grants significant exposure to different facets of Steppingstone programs, including direct curricular, non-curricular, socio-emotional, and administrative support.
Participants work closely with other Steppingstone interns, staff, and faculty members on projects both in and outside of the classroom. Interns meet regularly with the Internship Coordinators and their Lead/mentor teacher or Advisor(s). Interns also attend and participate in weekly seminars on various relevant topics in education, including adolescent development, growth mindset, and classroom management best practices.
Eligible candidates should have completed at least one year of college by the start of the internship. Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to racial and educational equity. Ideal candidates will have had prior experience working with children and/or in an educational setting. Please visit our website (www.tsf.org) for more information about our programs.
We currently do not know if we will be able to have an in-person session for Summer 2021. We are closely monitoring the spread of COVID-19, vaccine schedules, and city/state guidelines around safety. If we are not able to hold a fully in-person session, our programming will take place virtually, or in a hybrid format (partially in-person and partially virtual).
Intern responsibilities are outlined below. Note that there are some distinctions between in-person and virtual programming responsibilities, and the responsibilities listed below may need to be updated based on the nature of programming we are able to hold in Summer 2021.

The tentative dates for both in person and virtual programming are below. Currently, we are planning for six weeks of programming, but the length of the virtual and/or in person program may change as we continue our planning process:
- Intern Orientation: mid-June (exact date TBD)
- Summer Orientation for all staff: July 1-2, 2021
- Summer Session: July 6-August 13, 2021
In person programming (including any that is part of a hybrid program) will tentatively take place at Milton Academy in Milton, MA (just outside of Boston). Interns will ride the bus with Scholars from Boston to Milton. Housing is not included with in-person programming.
If programming is fully virtual, Interns will work remotely from their place of residence and will not need to be in Boston for any part of the internship. They will need to be able to log in to classes and meetings via zoom, and access platforms such as Google Classroom.
Starting salary is $13.50/hour and includes all orientations, summer hours, and bus duty if applicable. In-person programming will likely require more hours (approx. 40/week) than virtual programming (approx. 20/week).

FORMER INTERNS SPEAK:
“This was one of the best summers of my life. I learned so much it’s hard to narrow it down. The kids are all just incredible and this summer helped me realize how important it is to live a purposeful life.”
“Awesomeness. Honestly, I learned a lot of valuable skills and gained a lot of new friends. I enjoyed working with everyone at Steppingstone.”
“It’s safe to say that this summer was one of the best and most productive summers I’ve ever had! I’d do it all over again if I could. I learned what happens behind the scenes in a classroom and gained an even bigger appreciation for all teachers. I experienced classroom management, how to get through all of the curriculum, and planning skills.”
