The Broadcast Writer is responsible for writing clear and concise news copy to be read on-air by WTOP anchors. WTOP produces a 24/7 live on-air news product. The writer is an integral part of bringing each hour’s newscast to life in a way that is both factually accurate and engaging. The Broadcast Writer works as part of a diverse team to make WTOP News the leading provider of local and relevant news and information for the Washington, DC region.Job Duties:Write broadcast news copy that is accurate and balanced using sound news judgment. Copy must be clear and interesting, and executed under tight live broadcasting deadlines.Convert lengthy print and digital articles into concise broadcast copy by extracting all salient points in a conversational broadcast styleOptimize reporter package leads to be read on airWrite compelling teases that engage listenersMust be able to use audio clips to help tell a story. Must also be able to edit audio.Coordinate and communicate effectively with producers, anchors and reporters about what is needed for WTOP’s on-air product.Level-headed, team player able to work well in a fast-paced environment under constant deadline pressureall news meets WTOP’s core brand attributes and standards, and falls within all company and legal parametersQualifications:3+ years’ experience as a writer for a broadcast news operation (radio or TV)Broadcast Journalism degree or equivalent experience is preferredExcellent broadcast writing and research skills requiredExcellent news judgment and knowledge of current events at the local, national and international levelIn-depth understanding of the importance of utilizing sound bites, nat sound and other audio in newscastsAbility to work independently in a high-pressure setting under tight deadlinesAbility to make quick decisions and multitask during breaking newsIn-depth knowledge of local D.C. news marketStrong leadership and communication skillsKnowledge of news wire servicesKnowledge of the local radio industry and familiarity with all radio terminology and methodology (preferred)Project an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor.Ability to work in compliance with company policies and procedures.Ability to function well in a diverse team environment.Ability to work established schedule and other hours as needed.Hubbard Radio Washington DC LLC is an EEO employer.
