Y Stem and Chess is a non-profit organization that looks to teach underserved children chess, math, and computer science to empower them to pursue STEM majors/professions with the support of professionals. Our platform engages students with chess and connects them to a mentor. Through this mentor and the tools and lessons, the site provides the student will learn both personal and professional growth to prepare them for the future.
What We’re Looking For
Y Stem and Chess is currently staffed by volunteers with varying levels of software experience and commitment. Our flexible team is looking for more resources to help us develop our App. Developers experienced in:
- Familiarity with Github, Trello or other similar collaboration tools would also be appreciated.
Developing the Student/Mentor relationship is a key point to the Y Stem and Chess experience. To improve this, we’re planning to add support for Screen Sharing, Video Calls, and a Personal Development System aiming to improve life skills beyond chess. We’re looking to add more chess puzzles, tournament support, better support for matches that drop on one side or another, analytics, and more!
What You’d Gain
Given our team is full of volunteers Y Stem and Chess is currently not offering any paid positions. Engaged developers will learn to work full-stack while collaborating with other skilled software engineers. Our use of Github allows for experience creating feature branches that will be peer-reviewed, allowing for technical growth as a developer compounded with personal growth consuming feedback. Our flexible structure creates the opportunity to gain not only development skills. We also develop soft skills like experience in design, documentation, and management of specific features. With this portfolio of new skills backed up by the live and easy-to-access application, you’ll be able to provide solid proof of a job well done for future opportunities.
