What is the Experiential Learning Fund?

The Experiential Learning Fund (ELF) is a financial support initiative provided by the Office of Career Resources and Exploration at Rutgers University-Newark. This fund aims to empower students by providing a $2,500 stipend to support their participation in unpaid internship experiences. ELF helps students gain meaningful, real-world experience in their fields of study without the burden of financial strain.

  • Class Year: Open to first-year, sophomore, and junior students at Rutgers University-Newark.
  • Internship Type: Must be an unpaid internship that aligns with field of study or career goals.
  • Academic Standing: Students must be in good academic standing.
  • Commitment: Internships must require a minimum of 8 hours per week.
  • Application Submission: All applications must be submitted by December 15th to be considered.

  • Applications Open: November 18th
  • Application Deadline: December 31st
  • Award Notifications: Selected recipients will be informed by January 15th.

There are many different types of experiential learning opportunities. An experiential opportunity is a structured “experience where educators purposefully engage with learners in direct experience and focused reflection to increase knowledge, develop skills, clarity values, and develop people’s capacity to contribute to their communities” (AEE). At this time, this grant can only be used for internship opportunities.

You can still apply! If you are unsure about what category/criteria your opportunity fits in, you can reach out to the Office of Career Resources and Exploration to ask or apply to the application that you think fits the best and the reviewing team will determine its eligibility.

Once you are accepted by the reviewing board, we will go over your payment process.

Currently, funding is open to first-year, sophomore, and junior students at Rutgers University-Newark.

No! The application is open to all students for all opportunities. Although special considerations will be given to opportunities that are unpaid, nonprofit, and involved with social justice or the arts, we review all applications holistically.

All applicants will hear back from the committee by January 15th. If you have not heard anything by then, please contact the Office of Career Resources and Exploration (careers@newark.rutgers.edu).
